Getting There

Whether you're flying in and out of Portland for your trip, driving north from California, or south from Vancouver or Seattle, there are so many options for stops along the way. I've made over 10+ cross-country drives and 5 moves across the United States from east coast to the mountain west to the West Coast, so it's safe to say I love road trips, no matter the season. I've even solo road-tripped down the California coastline with my dog and back to Denver. There's truly nothing like experiencing the freedom and excitement of the open road. I really love these types of trips, sometimes even more than flying somewhere international.

Where to Stay

Days 1-3: Portland [Stay in Hotel in Portland's Pearl district or downtown near Powell's bookstore or Camp in Mt Hood National Forest, or stay along the Columbia Gorge ]

Days 3-5: Bend [stay in a hotel in downtown old Bend or a little outside the city center for cheaper]. Stay in Bend because this town is cute, and the temperature gets hot in the summer and dusty from this desert town. You'll want to have a nice shower and air conditioning after a long day hiking and adventuring in the sunshine.

days 5-6: Crater Lake [stay in Grants Pass at the Riverside Inn ] Driving down from Bend to the bottom the state ensures you miss a lot of the national park traffic; we got so lucky this past summer by entering from the northern park entrance and has almost no queue, while the south side (we exited and saw) there was a line of probably a thousand cars trying to get in.

days 4-7: Oregon Coast [Stay in Hotel Cannon Beach, Camp in Fort Stevens)

Reward yourself for a long road trip by staying at the Salishan Lodge along the coast.
