5 Tips for your First Cruise
Cruises have been always been a popular way to relax and travel. While they aren't for everyone, and are certainly not my favorite way to travel, they do have an appeal to many.
Tip #1 Get a Room with a View and Balcony
The price may be tempting for a room with no view, but the draw that separates a cruise from a stay at an all-inclusive resort, is that you get unparalleled views of the ocean from the moment you wake up all the way until you fall asleep. There was nothing more relaxing than having room service delivered to our cabin and sipping coffee and eating croissants as we watched the sunrise. We also spent time out on the balcony at night, drinking wine and looking out into the abyss. That was my favorite part about taking a cruise, the other offerings can all be found at resorts and casinos on land, but you're never going to have another chance to just experience the sea like you will with a balcony.
Tip #2 Check if you can BYOB (Bring your own Booze)
Cruise lines will often let you pack 1 bottle per person of wine or liquor. If you're limited to just one bottle of wine, then try to pack a Port Wine, since they are stronger and can last you longer than other types of wine.
Tip #3 Book your Shore Excursions Before you Sail
Shore excursions can be booked after making your cruise reservations. I would advise booking these beforehand as the activities will likely sell out once your arrive in port, especially if it's a small island. If you're coming into a larger island or capital of a country, like Nassau, then you can most likely still book activities when you get there. To ensure your trip is stress-free, do some research and choose activities beforehand.
Tip #4 Research the Cruise Lines not just the Sailing Destinations
Each Cruise line has a different theme and amenities and caters to a specific crowd/age group. Make sure to read up on each of the lines, not just where they are sailing! Some cruise lines are more budget-friendly and therefore will likely attract a younger crowd whereas others are geared more towards quiet and older people.
Tip #5 Think Before you Buy the All-Inclusive Drink Package
These are enticing and convenient, but don't make much sense financially if you're like me and can only drink a few cocktails a day and/or the ship is in port at a city. Don't buy the all-inclusive drink package unless you're actually going to be at sea for several days or if you know you can drink that much. When you get on the islands, there will be even more drinks to be had, so don't spend all your money in one place!
